Biography

  • First and foremost, I'm a husband and proud father of three little girls (like the Powerpuff Girls).
  • Taught English at the University of Nevada, Reno and Truckee Meadows Community College for six years.
  • Have a Bachelors in English from Brigham Young University, Utah and a Masters in Creative Writing from UMass Amherst.
  • Lived in Nevada for ten years. (Originally from southern Oregon.)
  • Worked part-time at ESI Security for six years, so I can appreciate small (to large) businesses. I also worked at the Amazon factory in Fernley.
  • Happen to be LDS / Mormon. Went on a two-year mission to Sweden. Also, an Eagle Scout.
  • In my spare time, I like to: write novels, read the newspaper, play pool and basketball.

Beliefs

  • The original reason I jumped in the race was to be like the Lorax, and speak for Education - as if it has no tongue in the NV state legislature.
    • My kids’ school, Stead Elementary, looks like a trailer park.
    • Nevada is circa 51st in education spending per capita (after Puerto Rico).
    • I teach English part-time for UNR and TMCC, but…it’s drying up - how much money the state allots the institutions (not to mention the Meridian Scholarship). So, I’m like: “If the legislature wants to take away my job, I’ll take away one of theirs.”
    • I support the “Education Initiative” (or “Business Margins Tax”) - provided the funds can be ear-marked for education.
  • We need to do more, to create (not just manufacturing and construction) jobs in Nevada. We still have one of the highest - unacceptable - unemployment rates in the U.S.
    • I think we need something like a New Deal, on the state level, complete with a mini - Civilian Conservation Corps.
    • Could have a huge public works program, overhaul our Water Works. So we don’t water our lawns—or even shower—in potable / drinking water.
  • I’d like to see the state minimum wage raised some day. (Don’t know if we’re ready now.) In the meantime, how about a gradated / graduated wage increase that big corporations—like Wal-Mart—could be forced to pay a higher minimum wage than small businesses.
    • I don’t like that Nevada is a “right-to-work” state. Believe in collective bargaining. Help out the Middle Class.
  • Miscellaneous: I’m pro-Choice and pro-Gun.(Although when I see the almost weekly school shootings, I think: “It’s not too much to ask, to ask for background checks and limit magazine rounds.”)
  • I think we could legalize marijuana, too. (Let the voters decide—ballot initiative) I don’t smoke, but if it creates one job and taxable revenue—or tourism… Good.
  • I think we should wrench away some of the federal land comprising 85 % of Nevada. Maybe could have, like, a modern-day “Homestead Act.” Offer free land to people and businesses who can develop it right away (shovel-ready).
    • I imagine we have a lot of untapped natural gas and oil. We could “Drill, Baby, Drill” in the Nye County Railroad Valley, for example.
  • I think we need to tax the Mining industry at all—say, with “Senate Joint Resolution 15.” It’s like these are diamond mines in Africa. Blood diamonds. (This is also in answer to the riddle of “How to get money for education?”—and other stuff. Obviously, we can’t count on casino revenue any more.)
    • I think stealing a little from the rich and giving to the poor… (Maybe a luxury tax.) That’s not a Robin Hood thing. That’s a Jesus thing.
  • I think we could do more to help out the poor:
    • Not bus the mentally ill down to California, for example.
    • Maybe use some abandoned / foreclosed properties to house the homeless.
    • Pare down the expensive, overcrowded prisons. (Release small-time drug offenders.)
  • We need to find a way to keep UNR and UNLV graduates in Nevada.(Stop the “brain drain.”) I like the Small Business Innovation Research Program, for example.
    • I like the sound and talk of making Reno more of a university town.
  • p.s. I have one crazy idea [Don’t laugh.]: to move Guantanamo Bay to Yucca Mountain.(That problem has to be solved somehow / someday…and we’ve got an empty facility.)
